My Career Journey

As a child I was drawn to teaching, and by the end of high school, Psychology was an additional passion and the clear path ahead. I enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Psychology and French, and subsequently completed an Honours degree in Clinical Psychology. After two years of work and travel, I did a Higher Diploma in Education to qualify as a teacher so that I could gain work experience prior to continuing my Psychology studies.

Overall, I taught for ten years, in both primary and high schools, and also lectured at University level.  Whilst teaching I completed my Masters degree and internship in Educational Psychology. I have been in practice as a professional Psychologist for over 16 years, working in schools and in private practice. In the last decade I have specialised in working with Adolescents, Adults and Parents, both individually and in school contexts.

Being trained in Positive Psychology, I have also furthered my experience and skills in developing and supporting Wellbeing and wellbeing practices, in school systems and with my private clients. I was privileged to have the opportunity to conceptualize, design, and run a wellbeing centre at St Stithians Girls’ College in Johannesburg, where I spent seven years as the Director of Psychology and Wellbeing. My family relocated to Cape Town in 2024, where I am now in private practice.

My career path thus far has been varied, fulfilling, enriching, challenging at times, and also fun. I believe we are always growing, adapting, and developing new skills, and I look forward to the rest of the journey!

Professional Development

As a Psychologist registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), CPD (Continued Professional Development) is an ongoing requirement. As such, over the years I have attended numerous additional courses, conferences, training, and supervision in various areas to expand on my knowledge and repertoire of skills, and continue to do so.

One of my special interest areas lies in Mindfulness-Based interventions.

It was a privilege to work alongside Carey-Ann in her role as an Educational Psychologist at St Stithians Girls’ College where we journeyed together to bring about a truly inclusive school environment where belonging and wellbeing were foregrounded. Carey-Ann brings a remarkable blend of professionalism, visionary thinking, and genuine care to her work with students, staff and parents. Her approach to wellbeing and pastoral care is deeply grounded in the principles of positive psychology, drawing insightfully on the work of Martin Seligman to create a nurturing and empowering environment for all.

Carey-Ann’s warmth, empathy, and calm presence make her highly approachable, while her strong professional boundaries ensure a consistently ethical and trusted practice. Her ability to support adolescent students through complex challenges, while also being a thoughtful and supportive guide for staff, speaks to her deep understanding of human behaviour and her commitment to fostering resilience and flourishing in school communities.

Carey-Ann brings a wealth of experience in educational settings, and I recommend her without reservation. She engages confidently and sensitively with a wide range of stakeholders, including teachers, parents, adolescents, and fellow psychologists – always fostering trust and collaboration. As a mentor, she offers insight, compassion, and wisdom, and is deeply committed to supporting the growth and wellbeing of those she works with.

Personal Life

I am married and a mom to a teenage son and daughter; they keep me young and on my toes! I enjoy being outdoors, especially at the ocean, and exploring all the Cape has to offer. My work is my real passion and I really do love what I do. When I am not busy with my practice, family, or getting out and about with our dogs, you’d find me connecting with special friends, spending time creating in my kitchen, or reading a (probably Psychology-related) book. And music is always playing in my home!
